Tatsuya Izumi on Why Successful Airport Automation Starts With People

Tatsuya Izumi on Why Successful Airport Automation Starts With People
Deputy General Manager | Narita International Airport Corporation

Automation can help airports respond to capacity constraints, labour shortages and increasingly complex operations. Yet technology alone does not guarantee success. Tatsuya Izumi explains why employee involvement, shared ownership and a willingness to learn from setbacks are central to meaningful airport transformation.

How would you describe your role in advancing airport operations?

The airport industry faces a wide range of challenges, from capacity constraints and labour shortages to governance issues. At the same time, emerging technologies offer new ways to address many of these problems. My role is to identify useful technologies and partners, then find practical ways to apply those solutions in a real airport environment.

Just as importantly, I work to create an ecosystem in which staff and stakeholders can participate throughout the process, from exploration and experimentation to refinement and implementation. The goal is to make innovation something that people across the organisation can contribute to continuously.

Why did the first Asia edition of Passenger Terminal Expo feel like the right platform for this discussion?

Passenger Terminal Expo has traditionally taken place in Europe, so its expansion into Asia is especially timely. With air travel demand growing rapidly across the region, I saw this as an opportunity to contribute to conversations that will influence the future of aviation here.

What lessons about automation will you share with attendees?

In my experience, automation succeeds not only because the technology works, but because the people using and operating it understand its purpose, see the benefits and feel a sense of ownership. Problems often arise when a solution is introduced without enough engagement.

I therefore place strong emphasis on building understanding and collaboration from the beginning. Front-line staff and stakeholders should be active participants rather than passive recipients. My session will cover successful large-scale automation initiatives, but I also want to discuss projects that did not go as planned. These experiences should not simply be labelled as failures; they are valuable opportunities to learn, improve future implementation and build resilience.

The journey towards automation is rarely linear. It requires patience, continuous learning, adaptation and a collaborative mindset that supports both technological and organisational change.

Why has automation become an unavoidable priority for airports in Asia?

Airports must address growing operational pressures if the industry is to develop sustainably. Automation is no longer optional, but moving forward requires collaboration with a wider range of technology providers and partners, including organisations outside the traditional aviation ecosystem. By sharing both the progress and the lessons from our own initiatives, I hope to provide practical takeaways for others leading similar transformations.

What would make the event valuable for you personally?

I hope to gain new perspectives, find useful ideas for solving common challenges and build connections with peers who are working through similar issues.#
