Professor Rakesh Nagi shares how academic and industry collaboration can help advance real-world airport operations.
Where does your work make the greatest contribution to airport operations?
My work focuses on the automation of apron operations, the optimisation of ground support equipment activity and the broader optimisation of airport operations. Through these areas, we aim to develop approaches that make operational processes more efficient, reliable and sustainable.
Why did you want to speak to an audience of airport practitioners?
I wanted to show how research and development can support practical improvements in airport operations. The conference brings researchers and practitioners together, creating an opportunity to connect academic work with the operational issues airports face every day.
Which themes will form the core of your session?
I will discuss apron operations automation, the optimisation of ground support equipment and wider airport operations. The focus will be on how data, systems thinking and new operational methods can help airports use resources more effectively and reduce avoidable disruption.
Why are these issues particularly urgent in Asia?
Delays affect passengers, airlines and airport operators alike. Airside manpower shortages can create further disruption, especially as traffic volumes grow. At the same time, airports must improve the sustainability of their operations. Automation and optimisation can help address these connected challenges by improving productivity and supporting better operational decisions.
What are you hoping to gain from Passenger Terminal Expo Asia?
I look forward to contributing our knowledge and scholarly work, learning more about the issues airport users and operators are facing, and identifying areas where research can provide further support in advancing airport operations.
