Aprizal on Creating Commercial Airports With a Strong Sense of Place

Aprizal on Creating Commercial Airports With a Strong Sense of Place
Non-Aero Commercial Group Head | PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia (InJourney Airports)

Across a network as geographically and culturally diverse as Indonesia’s, airport commercial strategy cannot rely on a one-size-fits-all formula. Aprizal discusses how local identity, retail innovation and digital experiences can work together to strengthen non-aeronautical revenue while creating terminals passengers genuinely remember.

What does your role involve across Indonesia’s airport network?

I lead the commercial evolution of airport spaces across a network of 37 very different airports in Indonesia. My focus is on combining each region’s local culture with world-class retail and digital innovation to improve the passenger journey. By turning terminals into more vibrant commercial destinations, we can build sustainable non-aeronautical revenue while giving travellers memorable experiences that feel connected to the place they are visiting.

Why did you want to be part of the first Passenger Terminal Expo Asia?

As soon as I heard the event was launching in Asia, I knew I wanted to take part. Managing 37 airports across Indonesia’s vast archipelago brings distinct operational, logistical and cultural challenges. This inaugural edition is an ideal platform to show how geographic diversity can become a commercial strength, combining authentic local experiences with stronger non-aeronautical performance, while learning from other leaders shaping Asian aviation.

What will attendees learn from your session?

I will share strategies for transforming a diverse range of transit spaces into high-performing commercial hubs. A key part of the discussion will be how to create consistent commercial growth across a large airport network without losing the local cultural character that makes each destination distinctive.

Why is this balance so important for Asian airports right now?

Two major trends are shaping the region. First, airports need greater financial resilience after the pandemic and must grow non-aeronautical revenue to help offset rising operating costs. Second, travellers increasingly expect authenticity. They do not want identical, copy-and-paste terminals; they want a strong sense of place that reflects the destination. Airports that can respond to both expectations will create more value for passengers and their wider communities.

What are you hoping to discuss with fellow delegates?

I am looking forward to high-level conversations with leaders managing similar geographic and cultural complexities. The first Asian edition creates a strong setting for exchanging cross-border ideas, forming new partnerships and collectively shaping the future of terminal commercial strategy in the region.

Join Aprizal at Passenger Terminal Expo Asia to explore how local culture, retail and digital innovation can create stronger commercial performance and a more authentic passenger experience.
