The Invisible Airport: Bringing Preventive Maintenance into the Restroom

The aviation industry has always been characterized by its highly rigorous approach to preventive maintenance. Reliability is engineered into systems, supported by continuous monitoring, scheduled maintenance and early intervention — long before a failure can impact operations. Yet surprisingly, this philosophy is not applied consistently throughout the wider airport ecosystem. One of the most frequently used, and therefore most important, parts of the passenger infrastructure is still maintained on a reactive basis: action is taken only after passengers have already experienced the negative consequences of a problem. So why can’t we apply the same preventive mindset to airport restrooms? IPEE sees an opportunity to change this. By using smart sensing and real-time data, airports can understand what is happening inside their restroom infrastructure, detect abnormal behaviour early and intervene before a problem becomes a failure. This enables airport operators to keep restroom facilities functioning reliably at all times, even during peak hours — ultimately improving passenger satisfaction and supporting stronger ASQ performance.
